Cancelled markets

Sometimes a question cannot be answered fairly: the event is called off, the rules turn out to be ambiguous, or the resolution source never publishes. The market is then cancelled, and every share, Yes or No, settles at 50¢.

What you get back

You holdYou collect
100 Yes shares$50
100 No shares$50
100 Yes and 100 No$100

Nobody wins and nobody loses on the outcome: a pair of shares is worth the $1 behind it, split evenly. Whatever you paid for the shares is not refunded as such; what you get is 50¢ a share. The platform fee on your buys is not returned either, but you earn or lose nothing more.

How you are told

Everyone holding a position is notified, with the reason staff gave. On the market's page the market shows as Cancelled with the date and the reason.

Collecting

Exactly as with a win: Collect winnings on the market's page or in your portfolio (website), or under Winnings to collect in the Portfolio tab (Telegram). One transaction from your wallet, a few cents of gas, and 50¢ a share arrives in it. See Collecting winnings.

Open orders

Any order you had waiting on the book is cancelled when the market is. Its money never left your wallet.

Why a market might be cancelled

Staff cancel a market only when the question can no longer be decided. Typical reasons: the match was abandoned and will not be replayed, the election was postponed past the market's date, or the source named in the rules stopped publishing the figure the rules depend on. Staff cannot cancel a market to change a result: a market whose outcome can be decided is resolved Yes or No, and you can dispute a proposed result while its window is open.
