Cancelling a market

Cancel a market when its question can no longer be answered fairly: the event was called off, the source stopped publishing, the rules turned out to be impossible to apply. Cancelling is not a way to change a result; a market whose outcome can be decided is resolved Yes or No.

What cancelling does

  • Every resting order is refunded (its collateral returned; with trading from wallets nothing ever left the wallet).
  • Every share, Yes and No alike, settles at 50¢. With trading from wallets, the result is recorded on chain as cancelled (payouts [1, 1]) and each holder collects 50¢ a share with Collect winnings, exactly as a win.
  • Everyone holding a position is told, with your reason.
  • It cannot be undone.

How

  1. Open the market's page. Under Cancel or delete at the bottom of the Resolution panel, press Cancel market (settle at 50¢). The button is there on any market that is not yet resolved.
  2. Write a reason of at least 5 characters (up to 300). It is shown to every holder, so write it for them: "The match was abandoned and will not be replayed."
  3. Confirm Cancel market. The dialog shows how much is paid back to holders (the market's open interest).

Admins only. The Cancel or delete panel is shown to admins; resolvers resolve markets Yes or No and ask an admin to cancel one. As with every resolution step, an admin who holds or traded a position in the market is refused: another admin must do it.

Cancelling a whole event

On a multi-outcome event's page, Cancel the whole event cancels every outcome that is not yet resolved, with one reason. Use it when the event itself is off (a tournament cancelled), rather than cancelling outcomes one by one.

Deleting a market that never traded

A market with no trades at all (a typo, a duplicate) can be deleted outright instead: Delete market under Cancel or delete. Resting orders are cancelled and their collateral returned; if it is its event's only outcome, the event is deleted too. A market that has traded can never be deleted, only cancelled or resolved.

On chain

With trading from wallets, a cancelled market's condition is reported as cancelled once its trades have settled on chain, by the resolver, like any result; holders collect from their own wallets. A market that never opened on chain (no wallet ever traded it) needs nothing there.
